Nikki and Mike have always loved the wide-open beauty of South Dakota. Originally from Wisconsin, they’d made several trips out here over the years—and when it came time to tie the knot, they knew exactly where they wanted to do it. No big venue, no long guest list. Just the two of them, surrounded by the quiet magic of the Black Hills.
Their elopement day started well before the sun was up. Before the sun rose, we met at Sylvan Lake—completely empty, completely peaceful. One of the perks of an early start: the entire place was theirs. The soft morning light reflecting off the lake made for the perfect backdrop as they exchanged handwritten vows. Intimate, heartfelt, and honest—exactly what an elopement should feel like.
After their ceremony, which was officiated by the always amazing Mary Maisey-Ireland, we hit the road and ventured down the stunning Needles Highway. Between the towering granite spires and winding forest roads, it’s a drive that never disappoints. We paused along the way for photos and video, soaking in the views and the joy of what they had just committed to.
What made this elopement even more special was the time we spent together the night before. Their photographer, Katie Mary and I met, up with them at Legion Lake for a casual engagement-style photo and video session. It was laid-back, fun, and the perfect warm-up for the next day’s adventure.
Nikki and Mike’s elopement was a beautiful reminder of how simple and meaningful a wedding day can be. No distractions—just love, nature, and the start of a new chapter. It was a joy to be their elopement videographer and to help them preserve this unforgettable morning.
